Throwback at the First Edition of the Special Olympics Kingdom Games in Bonaire

On November 2, 2023, we kicked off the very first Special Olympics Kingdom Games. For the first time ever, the islands of our Caribbean Kingdom were united at a Special Olympics event.

Around 150 athletes from Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Saba, St. Eustatius, and Bonaire took part. For some, it was their very first time off their island — their first time on a plane, their first passport, and their first time being welcomed as heroes at the airport.
Some special facts and figures:

  • 23 Swimmers
  • 26 Footballers
  • 34 Bocce Players
  • 9 Track & Field Athletes
  • 10 Beach Volleyball players
  • 14 Baseball5 Players
  • Frame Running introduced as an official track & field event

More than sports

The Special Olympics Kingdom Games turned out to be so much more than just sports. It was a celebration of friendship, opportunity, and dreams. It changed lives — perhaps forever — all wrapped into one incredible event.

One of the most touching quotes:

“Many of our athletes had never left the island before, and by getting a passport, they experienced a sense of identity for the first time.”

We’re already looking forward to the next Special Olympics Kingdom Games in Curaçao, and can’t wait to welcome all athletes with open arms!
